After
crossing the new bridge over the Sava River, we leave Belgrade and the
Balkan Peninsula and we enter South Eastern Europe and drive through
fertile Panonnian plains to reach the promontories of Fruska Gora.
Monastery
of Krusedol (16th
century) is a pearl among the 16 monasteries of Serbian “Mount Athos”
(Holy Mountain) and the Pantheon of eminent Serbs, guardian of the
Austrian Military border (Vojna Krajina), a live rampart against the
Turks. In the monastery there are the tombs of Arsenije Carnojevic the
III, leader of the Serbian tragic great migration from Kosovo and
Metohija in 1690, General Stevan Supljikac, commander in chief of the
Serbian forces in the Hungarian revolution 1848 and tomb of the Serbian
king Milan Obrenovic, who resurrected Serbian kingdom after 500 years
of cruel Turkish domination.
Sremski Karlovci is
a small
and charming baroque town, administrative, political, ecclesiastical
and cultural center of the Serbs in the Austro-Hungarian Empire from
the XVII to XIX century. It entered into world history on January 26th
1699 when the peace
treaty between Holy Alliance (Venetians, Poles, Russians and Austrians)
on one side and Turkey on the other, was signed. On that occasion a
round table was used for the first time in diplomacy. Later the Peace
Chapel was erected on that site to commemorate such an important event.
We will see the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral and the Patriarchs
Court with a unique exhibition of icons dating from the 13th to 18th
century. Afterwards we'll visit the Museum of Apiculture where we are
going to taste excellent wines and “bermet” (sweet desert or digestive
wine with herbs) and buy honey, wine and other grape products.
Lunch in the restaurant on the bank of the river Danube.
After lunch we continue to Novi Sad the capital of Vojvodina, with a
visit to Petrovaradin Fortress,
the Gibraltar of Danube” (the best preserved fortress built according
to Vaubann's system of fortification situated on an area of 112
hectars).
We'll
walk through Novi Sad and see Liberty Square, the Catholic Cathedral
from 1896 with a beautiful roof made of Zsolnay ceramic tiles, City
Hall, the Archbishop's Residence, the pedestrian area with various
shopping malls, etc. Returning via highway, crossing the Danube at
